Datsun 240Z RH Door Mirror Disassembled

In Body, In the Garage by George1 Comment

A few weeks ago a kind gentleman by the name of Ian gave me a right hand door mirror on a handshake and a promise for some form of payment down the road. I’ve been searching for one of these for 4 years now! They are rarer than rocking horse poo. So what’s the first thing you do with something so rare? Why, break it of course…!

I’m sorry you had to see that… breaking it was hard, much like punching yourself in the face with the intent of splitting skin.

The only way to get the stalk off the mirror head is to break the glass or, if you’re game, remove the glass by bending the mirror casing sides. I didn’t want to bend the case because I believe it will warp it too much. The glass was also damaged so I didn’t mind breaking it. Fortunately it came apart in 3 neat pieces so the overall shape is intact for when it needs to be replicated down the road.

I could hear something rattling inside the mirror head and as expected it was shavings of the dreaded rust disease. It had taken hold on the inside swivel part but it might be usable after it’s cleaned up. The alternative would be to buy a cheaper LH mirror and use the parts. I already have seven years of bad luck so to break another mirror would be entirely too much…

The rest looks usable after a good polish and some dent removal on the head. The stalk will need to be chromed of course but otherwise I’m very pleased with the condition.

Interesting to note the glass is actually date stamped on the back.
